How to Backup Texts on an Android

Some updates and changes to your Android device will delete your text messages. The Android operating system doesn't include an option to back up your text messages to an SD card by default. On GSM Android devices you can back up your text messages to a SIM card, but CDMA phones don't have this option. You can get around this limitation by forwarding your text messages to an email account.

Instructions

    • 1

Open the Messaging application on your Android device.

    • 2

Touch the thread containing the text messages you want to back up.

    • 3

Tap and hold on the individual message.

    • 4

Tap "Copy to SIM" if you're using a GSM Android phone.

    • 5

Touch "Forward" and type your email address in the "To:" field if you have a CDMA phone. You can use the Gmail account associated with the phone, or another email account.

    • 6

Tap "Send" to forward the message to your email.

Tips & Warnings

  • There are also many applications on the Android Market that will back up your text messages to your SD card. Touch the "Market" application and search for "text message backup."
