How to Block Second Life

How to Block Second Life thumbnail
Block access to Second Life for your children's protection.

Avatars created in Second Life mimic real life, including the ability to have sex with other members. This feature alone is enough reason to block Second Life if you have minor children in the household. Even if you block access to the website, the program connects to the server, avoiding the filters. The parental controls feature in Windows 7 can restrict access to the application, provided that adminstrator accounts are secured with passwords.

Instructions

    • 1

Click "Start" and type "User Accounts" into the search box. Press "Enter" to confirm.

    • 2

Choose "Create a Password for Your Account."

    • 3

Type a password into the first two boxes, and a hint into the last box. Click "Create Password."

    • 4

Go back to User Accounts and click "Manage Another Account." Create a standard account for the other user, if needed.

    • 5

Click "Set Up Parental Controls," then "Block Specific Programs."

    • 6

Choose the username you wish to block where it says, "Person's Name Can Only Use the Programs I Allow in this List."

    • 7

Check all programs in the list except Second Life. If you do not see it, click "Browse" and navigate to "C:\Program Files\SecondLifeViewer2." If you have a 64-bit operating system, you will find the folder here: "C:\Program Files (x86)\SecondLifeViewer2." Double click to add the executable to the list.

    • 8

Click the back arrow to go back to the main screen. Next to the username it will say "Parental Controls On."

Tips & Warnings

  • If you don't have Windows Vista or Windows 7, you can still block the ports in your firewall to prevent the viewer from connecting to the server. The application uses UDP port 443 for client authentication. Check your router's documentation for instructions on disabling ports for your particular model.
