How to Open an Air Conditioner
Opening an air conditioner provides access for thorough cleaning of the interior of the case and the unit itself. While larger central air conditioning equipment is serviced by qualified professionals, smaller air conditioners used in the windows of a home are typically managed and maintained by the owner. In some instances, the air conditioning unit may also be removed for installation. For example, the case would be installed in a window frame first, followed by the air conditioning unit. Unplug the air conditioner power cord from the electrical wall receptacle.

Remove the two screws from either side of the air conditioner's front grille assembly using the appropriate screwdriver. The screws are usually located at the lower portion of the grille and must be turned counterclockwise.

Remove the fan and the temperature control knobs by pulling them straight off by hand.

Remove the front grille assembly by pulling it out approximately 2 inches at the bottom by hand. Raise the grille up and off from the outer casing.

Remove the electrical grounding screw from either side of the case. Some models may have only one ground wire. You can identify the ground wire by its color, either green or green with a white stripe.

Grip the handle located at the lower front of the air conditioning unit. Pull the unit forward and clear of the outer casing. Have a helper support the outer casing as you pull, if necessary.
