How to Run Android in VirtualBox
Android is Google's entry into the smartphone operating system market. Although Android is designed to run on a mobile platform, it can be downloaded and installed on your computer using VirtualBox, the software that allows you to create virtual machines running different operating systems. This allows you to install Android and test applications even if you do not have access to a phone using Android.

1
Download the Android disc image ISO file from the Google code site. Use the most recent supported version and be sure to download the CD image file and not the USB image file.
-
2
Join the two files (liveandroidv0.3.iso.001 and liveandroidv0.3.iso.002) using either the "cat" command in Linux or UNIX or a joining program such as HJSplit in Windows.

-
3
Start VirtualBox. In the Virtual Machine manager, click "New Machine." Select "Linux version 2.6" as the operating system type, since Android is based on a Linux kernel.
-
4
Select the amount of memory -- 128 MB should be plenty -- and the size of the hard drive.
-
5
Click "Finish" to create the machine. Select it from the list of machines and click "Start."
-
6
Select the ISO file you created as the startup disc image in the First Run Wizard. Follow the onscreen prompts to finish installing Android. Select your screen size and "Finish" and you will have a working version of Android on your computer.
