How to Use a Custom Style in All Your Microsoft Word Documents

If you want to include a specific style or several styles in all of your Word documents, you need to change the Normal template. These instructions work for Microsoft Word 97 and Word 2000 (for PC) and Word 98 (for Macintosh).

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

    Go to the File menu and click Open.

  2. Step 2

    Navigate to the Templates folder in the Microsoft Office folder.

  3. Step 3

    Select Document Templates in the List Files of Type drop-down menu.

  4. Step 4

    Open the Normal template.

  5. Step 5

    Go to the Format menu and select Style.

  6. Step 6

    Create a new style or modify an existing style in the Style box. (See related eHows for style tips.)

  7. Step 7

    Click the Add to Template checkbox to add the new or modified style you created to the Normal template.

Tips & Warnings
  • You can select the font, font style, font color, and font size for the styles you create or modify.
  • Select Automatically Update in the New Style or Modify Style window if you want Word to automatically update any existing documents when you open them.
