Don't fall for counterfeit earbuds.

Popular brands of electronics and headphones are often copied as counterfeits and sold online or by street vendors. At first glance, the packaging and the earbuds look authentic, with what appears to be appropriate designs and markings. However, upon closer inspection you can find signs of knockoff versions of Bose earbuds.

Instructions

    • 1

Check the cord length. If the headphone cords seems unusually short, it's a sign of a counterfeit pair. According to ZDNet, the total length from the top of one earbud to the audio jack at the other end is 4 feet.

    • 2

Carefully inspect the meshlike design on the outsides of the earbuds. The fake ones have a silver "lining" appearance around the mesh-looking plastic. The real earbuds just look like mesh with no discernible lining.

    • 3

Look at the Bose logo on the sides of the earbuds. Authentic earbuds are marked with a logo that is slightly raised to the touch. The fakes use a decal.

    • 4

Remove the rubber ear tip on the left earbud. Inspect the edge where the rubber ear tip met the plastic of the earbud. Look for a four-digit number printed lengthwise. Fakes will lack this number or it will be printed elsewhere.

    • 5

Go to the Bose registration website and enter the serial number or product number. This number is on the packaging of the Bose headphones. If they are authentic, the registration will complete successfully.

Tips & Warnings

  • Some counterfeit headphones may produce an audible buzz. If the price seems too good to be true, they may be counterfeit. According to ZDNet, the In-ear Triports retail for around $60.
