How to Do Crown Shaping on the Loom

How to Do Crown Shaping on the Loom thumbnail
You can perform simple crown shaping on a knitting loom.

Knitting looms are excellent tools for making knitted items that consist of tubes -- double-knit scarves, sweaters, hats and the like. Sometimes, however, you might like to make a hat that is fitted to the curve of your head. This calls for the technique called "crown shaping," where you decrease stitches to make the hat smaller as it approaches the very top of the crown. Shaping the crown of a loom-knitted hat calls for some extra technique, but it can be done.

Instructions

    • 1

Separate the stitches of your hat into equal sections. If your hat is worked over 36 pegs, designate four sections of nine stitches each.

    • 2

Decrease each section individually so each comes to a point using the following method: Working from right to left, move the loop on the second peg to the third peg and the first peg over to the now-empty second peg. Move the loop on the sixth peg over to the fifth peg and the seventh peg's loop to the now-empty sixth peg. Knit across the stitches, pulling both loops over the new stitch and off the peg on the pegs with two stitches on them. Repeat this until you have only one stitch left, cut the yarn 6 inches from the loom, pull the last loop off the loom and pass the tail through to knot your knitting.

Seam all four points together to form a rounded cap. Turn your cap inside out. Thread your embroidery needle with the same yarn as your cap and run it in a zigzag pattern along the loops on the edges of the stitches that touch when you bring the points of the hat together, from the body of the hat up to the points. When you reach the apex of the hat, cut your yarn 6 inches beyond the hat. Thread your needle and sew the next seam together, again leaving a 6-inch tail at the apex. When you have seamed all four points together, tie the yarn tails in a knot.

Thread the ends of your seam yarn through the stitches, using your embroidery needle, to secure them. Trim any excess before turning the hat right side out again.
