How to Record Your Own Caller Tune
A ringtone on a phone does not have to be limited to the tunes available in the phone's ringtone library. It is possible to record other songs into the phone as well as live voices, singing and instruments. Then, when the phone rings, the custom ringtone can be played. The phone can also playback the ringtone for individual callers, if this feature is supported by the phone model. It is an easy process and requires free or inexpensive computer software, a low-cost cable and a computer.

Recording a Tune for Phone Caller ID
-
1
Connect one end of a 3.5 mm cable into the Mic In port on your computer. This port is usually pink and can be found on the back and sometimes front of desktop or laptop computers.
-
2
Hook up the other end of the cable to the audio source where the tune will come from. This could be a CD player, MP3 player or even a mixer if you plan to sing your own tune or play an instrument.
-
-
3
Navigate to the Start Menu and then to the Control Panel on your computer. From there, click on Hardware and Sound, followed by Manage Audio Devices. Under the recording tab, click on the tab.
-
4
Select the pink Mic In as the recording input. Play or sing the tune that will be recorded and watch the sound levels on the computer. Adjust the slider so the levels do not turn red; otherwise the sound may come out distorted. Click OK or Apply.
-
5
Open up your audio recording program. Cue the tune that will be recorded into the computer or get ready to perform the tune from the beginning if it will be sung or played on an instrument.
-
6
Push Record on the audio recording software. Play the tune from the audio source or perform or sing the tune. During this time, watch the sound level in the recorder to make sure it does not dip into the red range. If it does, it may mean starting over since the sound may be distorted.
-
7
Push the Stop button. Listen to the recording. If it is not satisfactory, repeat Step 7. Add any effects or make edits within the software if desired to alter the sound. Otherwise, navigate to the File Menu where there should be an option to save the recording. Since it will be played back on a phone, save it as an MP3 or WAV at a lower rate of 64-96KBps. This will keep the file size low.
-
8
Put the file on the phone. This can be done by connecting the phone to the computer via USB and manually adding it to the phone system. If the phone has Internet access, it can also be emailed and then opened as an attachment and downloaded to the phone. Depending upon the phone model, follow the procedure to set added sound files as ringtones. This can usually be done in Ringtone Preferences or by clicking on the file within the phone and selecting "make ringtone."

Tips & Warnings
Even though the audio file should be small, the phone needs to have an appropriate amount of memory. Make sure your phone has enough space or add an SD card if there is an available slot.
The final file should be not more than 15 seconds. Since a phone does not ring for the full length of a song, the recorded clip does not need to be long. A shorter clip also helps keep file size down.
