Most MIDI controllers, including MIDI keyboards, will work with Ableton Live.

Ableton Live is a professional-level digital audio application. Along with its recording and audio editing functions, it includes a comprehensive set of tools for working with MIDI data. Almost any MIDI controller will work with the application, provided the controller is properly installed on your system. Some MIDI controllers, such as the M-Audio Axiom and Axiom Pro, are designed to work automatically with Ableton Live, but most controllers will require manual setup within the application.

Instructions

    • 1

Install the MIDI controller. Consult the controller's documentation for installation details. Controllers of recent manufacture generally connect directly to the computer via USB, but older devices may require a MIDI interface. In most cases, you will also need to install drivers or other software the computer will use with the device. Check the manufacturer's website for the most recent software updates.

    • 2

Turn on the MIDI controller. The controller should always be turned on before opening Ableton Live.

    • 3

Open Ableton Live. Once it loads, open the "File" menu and click "Preferences." Live's preferences dialogue will appear.

    • 4

Click the tab labeled "MIDI/Sync" in the preferences dialogue. A list of available MIDI ports and devices will appear. Your MIDI controller will be listed by name in the "MIDI Ports" section. Its "Input" and "Output" ports will be listed separately.

    • 5

Locate the "Input" listing for your MIDI controller. In the "Remote" column to the right, click the button to turn the port on. You will now be able to use the MIDI controller to control MIDI instruments and effects within Ableton Live.
