How to Deal With Survivors of Layoffs

Layoffs affect the entire workforce, not just those that lose their jobs.

When a company downsizes and layoffs occur, it should be remembered that those employees that are left have also been negatively impacted by the event. They have experienced the uncertainty and fear of possible job loss. They may also be suffering guilt at having managed to keep their jobs, when people they know and care about have lost theirs. Additionally, they may have to cope with the stress of an increased workload and anxiety about their future job security. It is important for companies to acknowledge and address the feelings of survivors of layoffs, if they are to move forward with a workforce that is respectful, motivated and productive.

Instructions

    • 1

Meet with remaining employees to explain the company's current situation and the vision for future progress. Be honest and clear about expectations. If increased productivity is required, be specific, so that everyone understands the need for a concerted and united effort. Listen to employees and acknowledge their views. You must engender the belief that the group is a team and that every member is important.

    • 2

Create a strategy whereby positive employee suggestions are rewarded. Actively address the reasons for the layoffs. Those staff directly involved in specific activities, such as customer service, often have the best ideas for improvement, based upon their experiences.

    • 3

Organize activities such as potlucks and sports events to build and improve morale. Get everyone from the executives to the part-time and janitorial staff actively involved.

    • 4

Publish a weekly news update, letting everyone know what progress has been made. If there have been setbacks, discuss these, too. Keep everyone informed. Uncertainty only breeds anxiety.
