How to Travel With an iPad With Domestic AT&T
Travel with an iPad you use alongside domestic AT&T 3G service to enjoy Internet wherever you are in the country. The iPad isn't sold "locked" to AT&T -- as the similar iPhone is -- so if you do need to travel abroad, getting Internet on the device is as simple as purchasing a 3G SIM card and plan through a foreign mobile carrier that supports the iPad.

1
Use the iPad anywhere within the United States an AT&T signal is available. Just as is the case with an AT&T cellphone, it isn't possible to access Internet on the iPad using AT&T if no signal is available.

2
Visit a retail location for a cellular provider in any international country you visit and inquire about available iPad service plans. Purchase a microSIM card -- the iPad uses this smaller SIM card, rather than a standard-sized one -- for the carrier to use with the iPad. AT&T 3G service is only available in the United States.

Insert an unfolded paperclip into the hole at the top-left corner of the iPad and pop out the SIM tray. Carefully remove the AT&T SIM and place it in a safe place for storage, then place the new SIM card in, face down, and push the SIM tray back in. Once the name of the new carrier appears on the iPad's screen, begin using the iPad's Internet.
