How to Crochet Book Bags

How to Crochet Book Bags thumbnail
Crochet a book bag in your school or favorite colors.

Book bags need to be strong, since books can be heavy, so although a lacy crochet stitch is pretty, it is not a good choice for a book bag. You will need a strong stitch and a durable yarn to make a book bag that will not get pulled out of shape or get holes in it from book points and excess weight.

Things You'll Need

  • Size "H" crochet hook
  • Worsted weight yarn in two colors of your choice
  • Tapestry needle

Instructions

    • 1

Chain an even number of stitches, approximately 36, using one strand from each color so that your yarn is doubled. Stitch until the chain is 10 inches long. This chain will be the width of the bag.

    • 2

Turn your work and double crochet in the fourth chain stitch and in every stitch across. Chain three, turn the work, and double crochet in the second double crochet and in each double crochet across.

    • 3

Continue as in Step 2 until the work reaches twenty-four inches.

    • 4

Fold work in half. Sew sides together with a tapestry needle to form the bag.

    • 5

Chain eight stitches to begin the bag strap. Turn work and single crochet in the second chain from hook and in each remaining chain. Chain one stitch, turn the work and repeat until the strap reaches 24 inches.

    • 6

Attach the strap to the inside of the bag on either side.

Tips & Warnings

  • To make another bag, try varying your basic stitch. Cluster stitch is pretty and strong enough to be durable for a book bag.

  • Avoid using baby weight or other thin yarns, as they aren't sturdy enough for a book bag.
