Instructions

    • 1

Vacuum the drywall surface with a wet/dry vacuum to remove any dust. This will help the joint compound stick to the walls. Lay down drop cloths on the floor.

    • 2

Mix the joint compound with water in a bucket. Add water and continue mixing until the compound has the consistency of thinned mayonnaise or thick soup.

    • 3

Dip the drywall trowel edge into the joint compound, and scoop out a small amount. Press the edge of the trowel into the wall lightly, and pull the trowel across the wall, starting in a top corner. The trowel will skip, leaving the compound in a staggered pattern.

    • 4

Continue dipping the trowel into the joint compound and gently pulling it across the wall until the entire wall is covered. Vary the pressure and the angle of your wrist for larger or smaller skips.

    • 5

Leave the compound to dry for five to 10 minutes. It should not be totally dry but should not be dripping. Run the edge of the trowel over the entire wall, knocking off any ridges and smoothing the trowel lines. Let the compound dry completely before painting.
