Instructions

    • 1

Remove any decorative pieces from the bathroom, including furniture, hanging mirrors, trashcans and racks. Cover the floor with a dropcloth. Attach pieces of masking tape to the top of the walls, where the wall meets the ceiling.

    • 2

Pour the lighter paint shade into a paint tray. Apply a thin coat of the paint to the ceiling with a paint roller. Once the paint dries, apply a second coat if needed. Remove the masking tape pieces.

    • 3

Apply masking tape to the edges of the walls on the ceiling. Cover the moldings with more pieces of tape.

    • 4

Paint the walls in the bathroom with the slightly darker paint color, applying an even coat with the roller. Wait until the paint completely dries, and follow up with a second coat. Depending on the previous wall color and the material used in the wall construction, you may need a third coat.

Peel away the masking tape from the moldings, and use fresh tape on the areas next to the moldings. Paint the moldings in the lighter paint color, using paintbrushes or a roller. The lighter color differentiates the moldings from the walls and makes the space feel bigger.

Tips & Warnings

  • Pick two colors that are very similar, such as a lemon yellow and pale buttercup yellow.

  • Painting the ceiling a lighter shade opens up the space by drawing the eye upward. A darker shade brings the ceiling down, adds weight to the room, and makes the room feel much smaller.
