How to Make a Poppet Dress

A poppet is like a small voodoo doll.

A poppet is a small doll, sometimes used in a way similar to a voodoo doll or a JuJu doll. Once you make a poppet you can use it for decoration or in a variety of spells. Make clothing for your poppet doll using the doll itself to make your own patterns. Once you establish a basic pattern you can reuse it in several different ways to make individual clothing items.

Instructions

  Place your poppet doll on top of a piece of paper that is larger than the doll. Use a pencil to trace the outline of the doll's body onto the paper. Set the doll aside.

  Place a second piece of paper over the first one and trace your basic poppet outline. Set the first piece of paper off to the side. This way you will have one pattern that is undisturbed and you can use it later to make more poppet clothing patterns.

  Use your second piece of paper as a basic template for your pattern. Draw the image of a dress around the outline of the poppet body.

  Cut out your picture using scissors. Cut around the outline of the dress itself, not the doll body. Place your cutting line approximately 1/4 inch outside the drawn lines you created; this allows extra room for seaming.

  Fold a piece of fabric over on itself so the fabric is doubled with the right side of the fabric on the inside of the fold. Pin your dress pattern to the fabric, pinning through the paper and both layers of fabric.

  Cut out the fabric in the shape of your dress. Remove the paper and pin the fabric back together, with the right side of the fabric still on the inside.

  Sew around the seams of the dress, using a hand sewing needle and thread or a sewing machine. Sew the shoulder seams on the top of the dress. Then sew from the underarm down each side. Fold up the bottom hem of the dress and sew that as well.
