How to Make a Box Friendship Bracelet
There are many different materials used in the construction of friendship bracelets. The ideal string for a box knot patterned bracelet is called gimp or boondoggle, a bendable, plastic-based string. This string is available at most craft supply stores and full spools of gimp are relatively inexpensive. Many children have mastered the art of making box style friendship bracelets in a few hours; the process of learning this method is not complex but it requires practice and patience.

1
Measure around your wrist with a tape measure. Add 1 inch to this measurement.
-
2
Cut one strand of gimp string 1 1/2 yards long. Cut another 1 1/2 yards of gimp string in a different color.
-
-
3
Lay one strand down in front of you in a vertical position and fold it in half to find the center. Fold the second strand in half to find the center. Lay the center of the second strand across the center of the first strand horizontally. The strings should now resemble a cross.
-
4
Bring the top of the first strand down over the horizontal strand. Pull the bottom of the first strand up over the horizontal strand. You should now have two loops going over the horizontal strand.
-
5
Bring the right side of the horizontal strand over the closest loop and under the farther loop. Go over this loop with the strand and the slide the gimp under the first loop.
-
6
Pull the ends of the strands to tighten your knot. You should now have a strand coming out of each side of the square or "box" knot.
-
7
Pull the top strand over then around and under the left strand to form a loop. Make a loop with the bottom strand by going over then around and under the strand on the right side.
-
8
Pull the strand on the right side over the closest loop and under the farther loop. Weave the strand on the left over the nearest loop and under the farther loop. Pull all of the strands tight.
-
9
Repeat until you reach the length measurement you obtained in Step 1. Cut off any trailing gimp string and superglue the ends of the bracelet together. Allow 15 minutes for the glue to dry and put on your bracelet.
