Pair mismatched patterns and an oversized hat to create the eccentric look of the Mad Hatter.

Every character in the Lewis Carroll classic, "Alice in Wonderland," lends itself to a noteworthy costume on Halloween. The Mad Hatter, known for his giant top hat and eccentric personality, is a popular costume choice that can be easily and inexpensively created with thrift-store clothing and a few basic craft supplies. Purposefully mismatch loud colors and patterns when selecting the Hatter's jacket, vest and pants for a look that lives up the phrase "as mad as a hatter."

Instructions

    • 1

Tie the wide ribbon around the crown of the top hat, where it meets the brim. Tightly knot the ribbon in the back of the hat and trim the loose ends.

    • 2

Cut a rectangular section of poster board that is small enough to sit on the hat's brim. Write the words "In this style 10/6" on the poster board in large letters and numerals to create the Mad Hatter's trademark price tag. Set the price tag on the right side of the hat brim and hot-glue the tag to the body of the hat.

    • 3

Put on the white shirt and turn the collar up. Put on the bow tie or pin the ribbon bow in place as a tie. Put on the vest and plaid pants. Leave the shirt collar up.

    • 4

Put on the jacket. Place the pocket-watch chain inside one suit pocket and secure the end with a safety pin. Safety pin the watch face to the outside of the suit pocket to make it a visible part of the costume. Leave the jacket unbuttoned.

    • 5

Complete the Hatter outfit with the top hat, and dress shoes.

Tips & Warnings

  • Avoid skin contact with the hot glue and remember to unplug the gun after use.
