Instructions

    • 1

Remove any hardware, including wall outlets and switchplate covers.

    • 2

Apply painter's tape around the edges of the countertop. Use painter's tape to cover the tub or the shower and any other furnishings that can't be removed.

    • 3

Line painter's tape along the ceiling where the wall and ceiling meet and along the floor or molding where the wall and floor or wall and molding meet.

    • 4

Remove any nails and screws from the walls. Fill in any holes with putty. Sand the putty and any rough surfaces to create a smooth surface to paint on.

    • 5

Cover the toilet, countertop, floors and any other surface you want to protect from paint splatters with drop cloths.

    • 6

Use a tape measure to determine the middle point between the floor and ceiling of the walls. Mark the middle point with a pencil line. Use a straight edge to draw a straight line around the middle of the room.

    • 7

Dip a hand-held paintbrush into the terracotta-colored paint. Paint straight lines along the top of the wall near the ceiling. Do the same with the sand-colored paint along the bottom of the wall.

    • 8

Paint the upper portion of the wall terracotta with a roller until you reach the pencil-drawn line.

    • 9

Paint the lower portion of the wall sand with a roller until you reach the pencil-drawn line.

    • 10

Use a damp rag to blend the two colors in the middle of the wall. Move the rag in a circular rotation. Use the rag on both the terracotta and the sand colors to give them a soft, swirled look, reminiscent of tumbleweed. Rinse the rag once it becomes filled with paint, wring it out and repeat the process.

    • 11

Remove the painter's tape while the tape is still wet. If the paint dries, the tape can pull it off the wall.

Tips & Warnings

  • Use stencils to paint images of cactus plants and horseshoes on the walls to add to the Western look.
