How to Make a Crocheted Amigurumi
Making a chrocheted amigurumi requires basic crochet skills. This is perfect for the beginner as all you need to know are the magic adjustable ring, single crochet and how to end a shape. Amigurumi originated in Japan and similar to the cute Japanese cartoons, amigurumi toys have oversized heads and smaller bodies with tiny arms and legs. Once you learn the basics, you can use your knowledge to create and design an amigurumi of whatever object you want.

1
Purchase the type of yarn you want to use for your amigurumi project. Purchase as much as you need from the same batch so that you have color consistency.
-
2
Purchase an appropriate size crochet hook for the yarn you have chosen. Visually compare the hook size to the yarn width. You want your crochet hook size to be comparable to the yarn width or slightly smaller, as amigurumi crochet is always crocheted tightly.

-
3
Make a magic adjustable ring by creating a loop with one end of your yarn. Slip the crochet hook through the ring and hook the yarn to bring it through.
-
4
Keep holding the ring and hook the yarn without going through the ring and bring it through the loop on your hook. You should be left with one loop on your hook.
-
5
Insert the hook through the ring, hook the yarn and bring it though the ring. Hook the yarn without going through the ring and bring it through the two loops on your hook. This is a single stitch. Single stitch as many as you need to form the first row of your amigurumi piece.
-
6
Slip your crochet hook through the next stitch and perform a single crochet. Keep doing single crochets to form your shape.
-
7
Adjust your shape by increasing or decreasing as you work. To increase, single crochet twice in the same stitch. To decrease, bring the yarn through the next stitch, repeat, hook yarn and bring yarn through all loops on hook.
-
8
Continue single crocheting, increasing and decreasing as needed to make your shape. When your shape is complete, cut the yarn with a 6-inch tail and pull the yarn through your last loop. Thread the end of the yarn through to hide it with a yarn needle.
-
9
Start on the next piece of your project. Repeat all steps as many times as needed to create all the pieces that you need. Finish your piece by sewing all the pieces together with a yarn needle.
