The Best Way to Dry Orchids
Orchids are a type of flower that are generally prized for the exotic look and distinctively shaped blossoms. These are used as decorative household plants and in a variety of special occasion bouquets. Like most flowers, orchids can be preserved, but their delicate petals require particular care. The best way to dry orchids is with a microwave and a desiccant.

1
Choose a microwave-safe container that will hold the orchids comfortably. Do not use it for food again. A reasonably deep glass casserole dish works well.
-
2
Fill the bottom 1 to 2 inches of the container with a desiccant, such as silica gel. Desiccants are substances that absorb moisture, and are often seen in little white packets used in shipping. These are found at most craft stores and at online retailers.

3
Gently place the orchid (or more than one, depending on the size of the container) atop the layer of desiccant, as though you are "planting" the bloom in the gel. This keeps the flower from flattening against the bottom of the container. Slowly pour more desiccant around and atop the flowers, taking care not to crush the petals.

4
Place the uncovered container in the microwave and heat, beginning on a low setting for about two to five minutes. Times vary depending on the flowers and the microwave. Check the flowers periodically and continue heating until dry.
-
5
Remove the container with dried flowers from the microwave and cover as soon as possible. Crack the container to allow a little airflow. Let sit for 24 hours in order to cool. After 24 hours, remove the flowers from the container. Use the paintbrush to gently wipe away excess desiccant. The orchids should be ready for display, crafting or other uses.

Tips & Warnings
Choose orchids that are already vibrant in color, as some pale shades can fade during the heating process.
Some desiccants have potentially toxic chemicals added, so keep this away from children and do not reuse the container again for food service.
