How to Get a Summons on FF12
In Square-Enix's "Final Fantasy XII," players take part in freeing the tiny kingdom of Dalmasca from the tyranny of the Archadian Empire in the midst of Archadia's war with Rozarria. Players have many abilities at their disposal to complete this task, but one of the most powerful is the ability to summon powerful monsters known as Espers. Obtaining Espers can be remarkably difficult, depending on the individual Esper. However, summoning them to battle is a simple task.

Obtaining an Esper

Determine which Esper you wish to obtain. Each is located in a different in-game area, and knowing where you're going can save some serious travel time.

Find the Esper you wish to capture. They can be found in the open in dungeons and on most maps.

Battle and defeat the Esper. This is the only way to obtain an Esper, and will add its token to the License Board to be used by characters.

Have a character purchase the Esper's license on the License Board. This will bind that Esper to that specific character, so choose who goes with who wisely.
Summoning an Esper

Build up a sufficient Mist charge to summon your Esper. There are three tiers of Esper, requiring one, two and three Mist Cartridges respectively.

Go to the main battle menu during a battle and choose "Mist."

Select "Summon" from the "Mist" menu.

Choose the Esper you wish to summon into battle from the list of Espers the character is licensed to summon.

Tips & Warnings
Summoning an Esper is an instant cast, requiring no charge time to cast. Summonings can also be performed even if your character is Silenced.
When an Esper is summoned, only the summoner remains in party. The other two party members will disappear until the Esper is dismissed, runs out of time or is defeated. The Esper has its own Gambit set and will not respond to commands, but the Summoner is still fully controllable and can join in the battle or cast spells to support the Esper.
Triggering an Esper's Final Attack is key to victory. Final Attacks are the Espers' most powerful special moves, and are often devastating. However, they can be very difficult to trigger, depending on the Esper.
The Esper Belias is obtained during the course of the game's main storyline. Belias is a Tier One Esper.
The Esper Mateus is obtained during the course of the game's main storyline. Mateus is a Tier One Esper.
The Esper Adrammalech can be obtained after completing all of the Tomb of Raithwall Events, in the Athroza Quicksands. Adrammalech is a Tier One Esper.
The Esper Zalera is obtainable after completing all of the Tomb of Raithwall Events, and after completing the Hunts "Dalmasca's Desert Bloom" and "Marauder in the Mines." Zalera is located in the Barheim passage, and is a Tier One Esper.
The Esper Shemhazai is obtained during the course of the game's main storyline. Shemhazai is a Tier Two Esper.
The Esper Cuchulainn is obtainable after completing all of the Tomb of Raithwall Events and completing the Hunts "Waterway Haunting" and "Lost in the Pudding." Cuchulainn is located in the sewers beneath Rabanastre and is a Tier Two Esper.
The Esper Exodus is obtainable after the Salikawood gate is repaired. Exodus can be found in Empryean Seat, and is a Tier Two Esper.
The Esper Hashmal is obtained during the course of the game's main storyline. Hashmal is a Tier Two Esper.
The Esper Zeromus is obtainable after the defeat of the Judge at Mt. Bur-Omisace. Zeromus is located in the Stilshrine of Miriam, and is a Tier Three Esper.
The Esper Famfrit is obtained during the course of the game's main storyline. Famfrit is a Tier Three Esper.
The Esper Chaos is obtainable after visiting Archades and after completing the Hunts "Waterway Haunting," "Lost in the Pudding" and "Crime and Punishment." Chaos is located in Necrohol of Nabudis and is a Tier Three Esper.
The Esper Ultima is obtainable after completing all Giruvegan events. Ultima is located in the Great Crystal, and is a Tier Three Esper.
The Esper Zodiark is obtainable after completing all Giruvegan events and obtaining at least 10 Espers. Zodiark is located in the Henne Mines, and is a Tier Three Esper.
End-game Esper battles are among some of the most difficult in the game. For example, Chaos is over two million health points, and is immune to damage from all elements except Wind and Earth, which it absorbs and is weak against respectively. Careful strategy is the only way to defeat these exceptional opponents.
While you can theoretically load a single character with licenses for all of the Espers, this is an ill-advised move. Each Esper has different characteristics and moves that will naturally preclude them to better play when paired with specific character types.
