Check the refrigerator's drain pan. Every refrigerator drains evaporative water into a pan located below the appliance. If a pool of water is accumulating under the fridge, the source of the problem could be a cracked or damaged drain pan.

    • 2

Examine the ice maker if the refrigerator is equipped with one. If an ice maker is damaged, water likely will leak from the back of the fridge. Check both the water line tube and the fittings connecting the tube to the fridge for loose connections or holes. Replace the line or the connections if damaged.

    • 3

Check the fridge's drain tube if water is leaking inside the appliance. The drain tube or plug usually is located at the bottom of the fridge toward the back. If the drain tube is blocked, turn off the fridge and force warm water into the drain tubing using a turkey baster. Repeat if the tube is still blocked.

See if the refrigerator door is closing properly. If a door does not shut completely, it can cause condensation to leak through the door. Sealing problems often are the result of the damaged rubber lining that surrounds the door. Improper sealing also may cause the fridge to work overtime, leading to pools of water on the floor.

Double-check to ensure that it is, in fact, water leaking from the refrigerator. When damaged, refrigerators may leak refrigerant, which can be toxic. Call a repair company immediately if you are unsure what your refrigerator is leaking.

Tips & Warnings

  • If your refrigerator is exhibiting other problems, such as making a hissing noise or cycling more often than normal, these could be signs of a greater problem; your best bet in that case is to call a repairman.
