How to Make Pearl Knots

How to Make Pearl Knots thumbnail
Pearl knots are used on necklaces and bracelets.

A pearl knot is a simple type of functional knot, commonly used in jewelry-making. The pearl knot is used to create a neat space in between pearls and beads, it also helps to prevent damage and wear by stopping the beads and pearls from rubbing together. The easiest way to create a pearl knot is by using a special long, thin metal tool, called a beading awl. Beading awls and embroidery floss can be purchased from craft stores or online retailers.

Instructions

    • 1

Insert the bead or pearl onto your embroidery floss and position it into the desired place.

    • 2

Make a single overhand knot in the embroidery floss, as close as possible to the pearl, by looping the embroidery floss and inserting the loose end through the middle of the loop.

    • 3

Insert the metal part of the beading awl through the center of the loop.

    • 4

Pull the loose end of the embroidery floss to tighten the pearl knot around the beading awl, keeping it as close to the bead or pearl as possible.

    • 5

Remove the beading awl and firmly pull the loose end of the embroidery floss to create a tight pearl knot.

Tips & Warnings

  • Pull the embroidery floss with an equal amount of force to create neat, tight and consistent pearl knots.

  • If the knot is not as close to the bead or pearl as you would like, simply unpick the knot and start again from the beginning.

  • A thick needle can be used in place of a beading awl.

  • For the best results, choose a color of embroidery floss that matches your beads or pearls.

  • Store beads and small findings away from young children.
