How to Make Zipper Corsages

How to Make Zipper Corsages thumbnail
An old zipper can be given new life as a corsage.

A zipper corsage is a fun accessory that can be used as an embellishment on handbags, hats and clothing in the same manner as handmade fabric flowers. The concept is simple, but the effect is quite different and interesting. This is a great sewing project to complete using old clothing that has been outgrown, or is out-of-style. Instead of throwing out the piece, reusing even the zipper is the greener option. They can also be given as gifts for friends and family -- or for a special event. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Unzip each of the two zippers and cut them at the bottom where they join, to produce four distinct pieces. Cut off any fraying threads. Hold one piece firmly in the one hand and use the other to wrap it around itself -- forming a tight spiral-shape with the zipper teeth facing upward. Turn the spiral upside-down and use small, tight stitches to sew the outer layer of zipper to the inner ones, thereby securing the spiral.

Take another zipper piece and wrap it once around the spiral. Turn it upside-down again and stitch the second piece to the spiral using the same small, tight stitches. Turn the piece right-side up and begin wrapping the second zipper piece over the spiral at an angle; then stitch it in place. Continue wrapping the second piece at different angles, each time stitching it to the layer below. The turning of the fabric will begin to look like a flower on a corsage.

Complete the same process with the third and fourth zipper pieces. Loop the pieces outward and around so the "petals" open naturally -- and no pieces appear too uniform -- as it will ruin the overall effect. Secure these pieces with the same stitches, ensuring they do not unravel with tight knots in the thread.

Turn the corsage upside-down and place the pin back on the base of the flower. Stitch the pin back into place with small, tight stitches -- so it will be secure. Pin the brand new corsage onto a hat, handbag, headband or piece of clothing.

Tips & Warnings

  • If the needle and thread is becoming difficult to pull through the zippers due to the thickness of the corsage, use the jewellery pliers to pull it through.

  • If sewing is a new practice, multiple attempts may be required before the task is completed.
