How to Troubleshoot a GE Arctica

The GE Profile Arctica side-by-side refrigerator offers several convenient and energy-saving features. It is Energy Star-certified and includes a climate management system that helps keep your food fresh. It also features a touch pad designed for ease of operation. However, as with any appliance, problems can arise. Cooling issues, strange noises and icemaker or water dispenser malfunctions can often be resolved by going through a few troubleshooting steps before calling a technician.

Things You'll Need

• Measuring tape
• 3/8-inch socket
• Wooden spoon

Instructions

Interior not Cooling

1. Wait 24 hours for new refrigerators to adjust the interior temperature. A defrost cycle may have just begun if the refrigerator is not new. Wait 30 minutes for the cycle to end.

2. Set the temperature control to a cooler setting if the refrigerator interior is still too warm after waiting the appropriate amount of time.

3. Check the power cord. If it is plugged into the outlet, unplug it and then plug it back in. If the refrigerator is in showroom mode, this will reset it.

4. Replace the fuse or reset the breaker if these steps do not fix the problem.

Vibrating or Rattling Sounds

1. Place a level on top of the fridge to ensure it is level. Although some vibration or rattling is normal, excessive noise can result if the fridge rollers are not set so that the fridge sits level.

2. Measure the distance from the bottom of the fridge to the floor. The front of the fridge should be raised about 5/8-inch from the floor to ensure the door closes properly.

3. Turn the roller screws at the base of the front of your refrigerator clockwise to raise it slightly using a 3/8-inch hex socket or wrench.

Motor Runs for Too Long or Cycles Frequently

1. Wait 24 hours for new refrigerators to cool to the proper interior temperature.

2. Examine the shelves in the door and in the fridge. A package may be blocking it or protruding, preventing it from closing completely.

3. Set the thermostat to the next coldest temperature if the door is opened frequently or during hot weather. Also note that if the refrigerator is full, it will cycle more often.

Icemaker Not Making Ice

1. Ensure that the power switch to the icemaker is in the "On" position. New refrigerators require at least 24 hours to cool enough to produce ice.

2. Check the level of ice cubes in the storage bin. Ice cubes piled up or stuck in the bin will cause the icemaker to shut off.

3. Check the water supply to make sure it is connected properly and that it is turned on.

Water Dispenser Does Not Work

1. Check the water supply to ensure it is connected and turned on.

2. Press the dispenser arm and hold for three seconds to remove any air that may be trapped in the lines.

3. Press and hold the lock pad for three seconds if the dispenser has been locked.

4. Replace the water filter cartridge. If it is clogged, the dispenser will not work.

Water Pooling on the Floor or Bottom of the Freezer

1. Turn off the icemaker. Water pooling on the floor or in the freezer indicates that you may have ice cubes jammed in the dispenser chute.

2. Poke through the chute with a wooden spoon to loosen the cubes.

3. Turn the icemaker back on and dispense some ice to ensure you've cleared the blockage.

SelectTemp or Beverage Center Features Not Working

1. Set the refrigerator to a cooler temperature. When the temperature is at the warmest setting these features are disabled to save energy.

2. Wait for the interior temperature to cool and try the features again.

3. Press the beverage center pad to restart it if the refrigerator has been running with this feature turned on for several months without use. It shuts off after six months of continuous operation.
