1
Paint an accent wall. In many apartments, you're allowed to paint the walls as long as you return them to their original color before you leave. To minimize the hassle, pick one wall to serve as the focal point for your room. Choose a color that's noticeable but not so dark that it will take six coats to cover it up again. Think sage green, rosy pink or slate blue.

2
Stick wall decals in prominent places. Many options are available for as little as $20, and some are even reusable. Choose a design that complements your home decor, such as a tree silhouette for a nature-inspired space or a quirky quote for a colorful modern room.

Create your own art. Scavenge thrift stores and garage sales for interesting odds and ends that you enjoy and put them together to create a handmade wall hanging. Frame vintage fabric, arrange a collection of buttons and baubles in a shadowbox or repaint the frame of an old mirror in bright colors to make a bold piece of decor.

Make your own faux wallpaper with a favorite piece of fabric. Paint liquid starch onto the wall and lay the material over it. Secure the fabric with thumbtacks while you finish the project. Brush a second layer of starch on top of the fabric so the solution penetrates the fabric completely. Remove the thumbtacks once the fabric has dried.
