How to Troubleshoot a GE Triton XL That Won't Drain and Hums

A Triton XL dishwasher that won't drain and hums most likely has a problem with the drainage system. Once a dishwasher is done with the wash cycle, it pumps the dirty water out through the dishwasher pump and into the drain hose. Sometimes, food debris can clog either the pump or the pump filter, making the dishwasher pump hum continuously but not letting it drain. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Turn off the power supply for the Triton dishwasher at the main circuit breaker. The switches on the breaker should be identified so you can determine which switch controls what circuit. Double-check that you've turned off the right breaker by trying to start the dishwasher. The dishwasher should remain off if you've cut the right circuit.

    • 2

Open the dishwasher door and locate the drain filter in the bottom of the dishwasher cabinet. Grab the top of the filter and turn it counterclockwise to remove it from the Triton dishwasher. Rinse out underneath the sink. Replace the filter.

    • 3

Remove the screws that hold the bottom front panel in place on the Triton with a screwdriver. In some installations, you may need to first loosen the screws that secure the dishwasher to the underside of the cabinet and then pull the dishwasher out a few inches so you can access the screws. If needed, open the front dishwasher door to access the screws on top of the front panel. Pull off the front panel and set it aside.

    • 4

Place a towel on the floor underneath the dishwasher chassis. Locate the point where the Triton dishwasher drain hose connects to the dishwasher pump. There will be a clamp in this position that holds the hose onto the pump. Loosen the hose clamp by holding the hose in place and pulling the hose off the pump.

    • 5

Locate the other end of the hose where it connects to the tailpiece or garbage disposal underneath the kitchen sink. Loosen the hose clamp and pull the hose out of position. Trace the hose back towards the dishwasher. Look for any hose clamps or ties that hold the hose in place on the wall or cabinet. Remove the clamp and pull the hose out of position.

    • 6

Rinse out the hose with a spray from a garden hose until the water runs through the hose with no obstructions.

    • 7

Replace the hose and secure it with the hose clamps on either end. Replace and secure the hose clamp in the center of the hose.
