Dry, dull-looking skin is often the result of dead skin cell buildup. An extreme example of dead skin buildup is the gray, alligator-like skin that can develop on the knees. Regular exfoliation removes dead skin cells and gives your skin a healthy glow. Although you can purchase commercial exfoliates, you can make your own with supplies found readily in the home. Things You'll Need

  • Bowl
  • 3/4 cup brown sugar
  • 1/2 cup dry oats
  • 1/4 cup honey
  • 1 cup olive oil
  • 5 drops vanilla essential oil
  • Spoon
  • Plastic jars
  • 1 cup sea salt
  • 1 cup almond oil
  • 5 drops peppermint essential oil

  1. Sugar Scrub

      Pour 3/4 cup brown sugar into a bowl. Add 1/2 cup dry oats and 1/4 cup honey.

      Pour 1 cup olive oil over the ingredients. Add 5 drops of vanilla essential oil.

      Spoon the sugar scrub into a plastic jar. Seal it with a lid. Store your homemade sugar scrub at room temperature.

Tips & Warnings

  • Exfoliate two to three times per week to remove dead skin cells.

  • Substitute white sugar for the brown sugar and your favorite essential oil for vanilla.

  • Olive oil, almond oil or jojoba oil are all suitable for homemade exfoliating scrubs.

  • Peppermint essential oil is an energizing fragrance. Substitute lavender or chamomile essential oils in the salt scrub for a relaxing fragrance. Use grapefruit essential oil as an alternative to peppermint oil.
