How to Become an Automotive Mechanical Engineer
Automotive engineers are specialized mechanical engineers who focus on the design, manufacture and testing of commercial and high-performance race vehicles. Automotive engineers work in the research and development of innovative vehicles, use computers to design vehicle parts or systems, design and test new vehicles, design and develop automotive tools and work on racing teams to make adjustments to vehicles to enhance their performance. Becoming an automotive mechanical engineer requires several years of education and experience.

Obtain an engineering degree. Individuals interested in becoming automotive mechanical engineers can earn a bachelor's degree in general engineering, mechanical engineering or automotive mechanical engineering. Engineering programs exist in many different forms at colleges and universities; check fields of study and coursework before applying to be sure that classes in an automotive specialty are offered. Degree programs typically require candidates to complete extensive coursework in mathematics, applied science and general engineering. Some programs are more traditional, requiring students to spend four or five years completing a bachelor's degree program. Other five- or six-year programs allow candidates to obtain a bachelor's degree and a master's degree simultaneously. Some bachelor's degree programs allow students to complete two-year internships or work as entry-level engineers to gain experience in a specialized field.

Obtain certifications in computer applications and languages. These certifications can be obtained as part of an engineering degree program or after obtaining a job. Engineers often use computer-aided drafting (CAD) or sketching software, computer graphics, computer languages such as C++ or Fortran and Adobe Photoshop software. Many software companies offer professional certifications and training in these particular applications or skills. Continue a path of professional development to stay current in your field.

Joining these organizations provides you with additional opportunities for professional development and advancement. Additionally, membership in an engineering organization can help you develop contacts, learn about job opportunities and stay informed about advances in the field through the group's publications.
