You can type a Sigma with the virtual keyboard on your Mac.

People use the sigma, the 18th letter in the Greek alphabet, for a variety of reasons, such as when they need to type a mathematical symbol for summation in statistics, or if they need to write the name of a college fraternity. All Macs come with Greek characters already installed, and you can easily enable Greek with the Keyboard settings in Apple's System Preferences.

Instructions

    • 1

Click the Apple logo at the upper left of the screen. Click "System Preferences."

    • 2

Click "Keyboard," and then click the "Keyboard" tab. Click the "Show Keyboard and Character Viewer in Menu Bar" check box. An image of a small flag appears in the Mac's menu bar.

    • 3

Click "Show All," and then click "Language and Text."

    • 4

Click "Input Sources," and then click the "Greek" check box in the "Select Input Methods to Use" section. Click the check box labeled "Show Input Menu in Menu Bar."

    • 5

Click the flag icon on the menu bar at the top of the screen, and then click "Show Keyboard Viewer." The virtual keyboard appears.

    • 6

Click the flag icon, and then click "Greek" to enable Greek in the virtual keyboard.

    • 7

Launch an application that you use to type text with. For example, click "TextEdit" on the Dock of your Mac to launch Apple's native word processor. A new blank document appears.

    • 8

Click the Sigma character in the virtual keyboard to make a Sigma appear in your document. You can also press the "S" key on the Mac's keyboard to type a Sigma.
