How to Deal With Icy Driveways

Things You'll Need
- Snow gear
- Thick work gloves
- Salt (calcium chloride)
- Birdseed
- Snow shovel

Put on thick work gloves. Sprinkle salt made from calcium chloride on the icy driveway, if you must use salt. Avoid salts made with sodium chloride and potassium chloride, as these are the more damaging salts to landscape plants. Sprinkle the salts on the ice on the driveway and avoid sprinkling near grass and other iced plants.

Sprinkle birdseed on top of the ice. As the ice melts, the birdseed provides traction for stomping snow boots. Do not use wood ashes or cat litter.

Shovel the snow. Bundle up and start shoveling soon after the snow falls. The sooner you shovel, the better chance you have of removing ice bits and snow to create a clear pathway.
