How to Make a Lock Stitch

The lock stitch is a basic sewing stitch and is named as it is made when two threads interlock. Most modern sewing machines use a lock stitch, with one thread coming up from the bottom by way of the bobbin and the second thread coming from the top by way of the needle. However, the lock stitch can also be made by hand and is commonly used in bookbinding, embroidery and knot tying.

Instructions

    • 1

Thread a needle and tie a knot at the end of the thread.

    • 2

Insert the needle through the material that is being sewn and pull it out the back. There should now be a small loop of thread. Continue sewing in this manner until you have reached the end of the material.

    • 3

Pull the loops slightly so there is some slack, using your fingers. There should now be slightly bigger loops across the entire section of material.

    • 4

Repeat Steps 2 and 3 to create a second row of loops that are made under the first set of loops. Tie the two pieces of thread together.

    • 5

Sew the lock stitch by pulling a threaded needle through each set of adjacent loops. Pull tightly to remove any slack. Repeat this on each set of loops. Tie off the thread.
