Heart-shaped wreaths are decorative accents in your home year-round. They are especially charming as gifts for Valentine's Day, birthdays or wedding anniversaries. They can also be used as decorations for a party. You can make a heart-shaped wreath in any size you like, whether small enough to add to a teddy bear's arms or large enough to hang on your front door. Instructions

  1. Making Fabric Roses

    • 1

Select the fabric you want for your roses. Depending on the size of your roses and the wreath, the amount needed will vary. For a single, 3-inch rose, you will need about 16 inches of fabric that is 4 inches wide. Cut a long strip of fabric for each flower.

    • 2

Fold the long length of the fabric in half with wrong sides together. Pin to keep it together.

    • 3

Thread your needle with coordinating color thread and knot the end. Stitch a row of long stitches along the cut edge of the fabric, as close as possible. Be sure to catch both edges of the fabric in the stitches. Gather the fabric to about half its original length. Knot the end.

    • 4

Preheat the glue gun with a glue stick.

    • 5

Pull the thread when you reach the end of the fabric to gather.

    • 6

Wrap one end of the gathered fabric around itself and secure at the cut edge with a drop of glue. This is the center of the flower and should be fairly tight.

    • 7

Continue to wrap the fabric around itself, gradually making the wraps looser to resemble the petals on a rose. Add a drop of glue to secure each wrap.

    • 8

Cut a small circle of felt to coordinate with the flower color. Glue the felt circle over the bottom of the rose to cover the stitched and glued gather.

    Assembling the Wreath

    • 9

Paint a foam, heart-shaped wreath form with acrylic paint to coordinate with the color of the roses. Use a foam craft brush. Allow it to dry.

    • 10

Wrap a length of ribbon or wire around the top of the wreath to hang. Wrap the ribbon, tie a knot to secure to the wreath, and then tie a knot at the end of the ribbon to create a hanging loop.

    • 11

Apply a drop of glue to the bottom of a rose and position it on the inside edge of the wreath. Continue adding roses to the inside edge, then move to the facing edge. Create three rows of roses on the wreath along the inside edge, facing edge and outside edge.

Tips & Warnings

  • An 8-inch, foam, heart-shaped wreath will need about 30, 3-inch or 60, 1-1/2-inch roses to cover it.

  • Plan the arrangement of your roses before gluing. Fill in the spaces between the flowers in the previous row as you position each flower. This will create a fuller appearance.

  • To use pre-made fabric roses, remove any stems with scissors or wire cutters before positioning.

  • Use care when working with a glue gun. Even a low-temperature gun can burn the skin.
