How to Build a Child's Basic Model Train Layout
There are dozens, or even hundreds, of different types of basic model train sets that are designed for children. The assembly instructions and possible layouts for each of these model train sets can vary by quite a lot. This is why it's important for you to refer to the instructions for your specific train set when building the layout. However, there are some basic layout considerations that apply to all model train setups.

1
Keep the layout within the size of the base for the model train set. Sometimes, the base is supplied with the model train. Alternatively, you might use a table or other structure in your home as a base.
-
2
Make the track into a closed loop. Although there are many possible variations to this pattern, model train tracks are set in a continuous loop to allow the train to go around and around without flying off the tracks.

3
Take up the entire base with the loop. While you want the track to remain on the base, you should not waste any room. Use all the track pieces you can to make a large layout. This makes playing with the model train set more enjoyable.
-
4
Place bridges and tunnels that were included in your set. Be sure they are high enough for the model train to go beneath them when on the track.
-
5
Do a test run of the model train layout before letting your child take over. Be sure the train stays on the track, and watch carefully for any signs of sparks or stress on the track.
