How to Improve Heat Flow to Room
Central heating in your home loses its efficiency over time due to holes in ducts as well as dirty filters that limit the air's ability to circulate through your home and balance the indoor temperature. As heat seeps through cracks of the heating ducts, the furnace works harder and uses more energy to maintain a room's warmth. Rather than call a professional, you can repair your home's ducts with basic do-it-yourself maintenance to keep your home toasty during the cold season. Does this Spark an idea?

1
Turn on your home's heat and inspect the heating ducts in the attic. Place your hand a few inches away from the duct to check for holes in the duct.
-
2
Place a piece of metal tape over the holes to repair the torn duct. Metal tape is durable and safe to use on heating ducts and improves heat flow by keeping the forced air in the duct.

3
Caulk cracks around vents in your room. Small openings around heating vents causes air to leak while the heat is on, which reduces efficiency.
-
4
Remove the old filter from the furnace and replace it with a new one every three months. Filters collect air pollutants to improve air quality but reduce the efficiency of heat flow if the filter becomes clogged with dirt and dust. Replace the filters once a month if the filter collects buildup at a rapid rate.

5
Close the vents in unused rooms, such as the dining room, to force the flow of heat into a specific room. The more vents that are open in your home, the longer it takes for each room to warm up as the furnace tries to balance the temperature in each room.

6
Turn on your room's ceiling fan. Switch your ceiling fan's rotation to circulate the heat through the room by pushing the air to the ceiling and evenly distributing the flow of warm air.
