DIY: Pyramid Studs

DIY: Pyramid Studs thumbnail
Pyramid studs look great on belts and other accessories.

Pyramid studs are small, triangular-shaped metal decorations with small prongs at the edges. Garments covered in pyramid studs are often very expensive in stores, since the studs are installed by hand. If you love the look of pyramid studs but don't like the price, consider studding your own garments for an easy style update.

Instructions

    • 1

Choose a pattern for your studs. If you'd like an even, geometric look, use the ruler to measure out the desired intervals and mark them with the chalk. For a more organic look, choose an area of the garment to cover with studs, like the cuffs or collar.

    • 2

Select a stud, and hold it over the fabric where you'd like to place it. If you're studding leather or a thicker fabric, press down lightly with the prongs to make two small indentations in the leather. Use an awl to punch through the fabric at the marked indentations, making holes just big enough to accommodate the stud prongs.

    • 3

Push the prongs of the stud through the fabric so that they poke out the other side. Turn the fabric over, and use the pliers to bend the prongs inward, securing the stud. Repeat as desired until the garment is finished.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you're having trouble getting the awl to punch through the fabric, lightly tap the back of the handle with a rubber mallet to help force it through.
