How Do I Build a Paper Boat That Will Maintain Some Weight?

A plethora of origami paper boat instructions create numerous boat models to display, pretend play and float on water. Each paper boat will float on water due to the property of the paper and the surface area of the boat. A paper boat that holds weight and floats is very possible to make. The weight of the paper will help the design to float for a longer period of time and allow it to hold more weight. Make a paper boat from a piece of cardstock.

Instructions

    • 1

Place a piece of 8 1/2 by 11 inch cardstock on a flat work surface. Turn the paper so the 8 1/2 inch edges are on a horizontal axis. Fold the top edge to the bottom edge and crease the fold.

    • 2

Fold the top left-hand and top right-hand corner to the center of the paper to create two triangles that align side-by-side, bottom edges even. Crease along the fold. A narrow strip of paper approximately 1 1/2 inch wide remains at the bottom of the cardstock.

    • 3

Fold the top layer of the bottom 1 1/2 inch edge up, even with the straight line beneath the two triangles. Crease along the fold. Fold the flap on the left and right side of the strip that protrudes past the triangles to the back, flush with the paper. Repeat the process on the opposite side. Crease along the fold. If you stop here, this is an origami paper hat.

Turn the cardstock 90 degrees so the two points are now facing up and down. Flip the folded paper over so the opening you might fit over your head for a hat is on top.

    • 5

Place your thumbs inside of the opening on the left and right edge. Pull the edges out causing the top and bottom point to come together to form a diamond shape. Crease along the fold.

    • 6

Fold the top layer of the bottom point up to meet the top point of the diamond shape and create a triangle. Crease along the fold. Flip the diamond over and repeat the process on the opposite side.

Turn the cardstock 90 degrees so the two points are now facing up and down. Flip the folded paper over so the opening is on top. Place your thumbs inside of the opening on the left and right edge. Pull the edges out causing the top and bottom point to come together to form a diamond shape. Crease along the fold.

Look at the top point at the two pointed flaps on each side of the point. Pull the two pointed flaps away from the center top point to open the boat. Flatten the boat shape along the bottom fold line.

    • 9

Insert your fingers into the inside center triangle of the boat. Pull the triangle apart to add width to the boat. Pull the side edges to shape the boat to the desired width.

Tips & Warnings

  • Place the paper boat in water. Place paper clips around the triangle shape in the middle of the boat. Continue to add paper clips until the boat sinks.
