How to Make Color Stripes on a Garter Scarf

You can make a garter stitch scarf with self-striping yarn.

Self-striping yarn will add some snazzy stripes to a woolen scarf knitted with the garter stitch. Making this scarf requires basic knowledge of how to knit, so the project can be tackled by knitting beginners. The self-striping yarn eliminates the use of multiple colors of yarns and time-consuming yarn end weaving. A child over the age of 8 with an interest in knitting will enjoy making this uncomplicated scarf. Find self-striping yarn at knitting supply stores.

Things You'll Need

• 1 skein worsted weight self-striping yarn
• Knitting needles size 8
• Scissors

Instructions

1. Make a loop at the end of the yarn skein strand. Insert one needle in the loop. Insert the second needle in the loop, positioning the second needle behind the first. Wrap the yarn strand around the back needle and pull it through the loop. Insert the first needle in the loop to transfer the loop to the first needle to make one cast-on stitch. Repeat, to make 20 cast on stitches.

2. Transfer the knitting needles to opposite hands. Repeat the series of steps to cast on, eliminating the loop transfer, to make the knit stitch in each stitch.

3. Knit each row in the same manner, which is known as the garter stitch, until the scarf is 48 inches long.

4. Cast off by knitting two stitches, slipping the first stitch over the second stitch on the knitting needle, and repeating until only one stitch remains. Cut the yarn and pull the yarn end through the remaining loop.
