How to Install a Jet Ski Primer Kit
Installing a primer kit on your jet ski enables you to get fuel directly into the carburetor of your jet ski without having to rely on the fuel pump. A primer kit usually helps solve problematic starting issues and eliminates the need for choking the engine to start it. Most primer kits come equipped with all of the parts you need. Make sure you are familiar with the parts of the jet ski before beginning; otherwise, you risk damaging your vehicle.
Things You'll Need
- Primer kit
- Flathead screwdriver
- Drill and bits
- Hammer
- Threadlocking adhesive

1
Begin by disconnecting the battery on the jet ski and removing the fuel cap. Take the flame arrester assemble off and remove the cables for the choke and throttle.
-
2
Take the choke cable and knob out of the dash. Mark where the fuel lines are on the carburetors and remove the lines. Remove the carburetors and drain any fuel from them.
-
-
3
Use a flathead screwdriver to pry off the flat end of the screws holding the choke plates to the carburetors. Remove the plates. Disconnect the coupler unit that connects the two choke shafts and remove the choke shafts.
-
4
Test the fit of the brass plug and plug with the barbed nipple included in your kit. Fit these plugs into the holes where the choke shafts were. If it cannot fit, carefully enlarge the holes using a drill with different bits. Enlarge by drilling the hole and gradually increasing the size of the bit. The holes should be big enough for the plug to fit halfway in the hole when inserted by hand. Hammer it the rest of the way.
-
5
Reinstall the carburetor, using a small amount of adhesive threading on the nuts to hold it securely in place.
-
6
Fit the primer where the choke knob was. Apply a small amount of adhesive threading to the nut before tightening in place.
-
7
Find the fuel line that runs from the tank to the On/Off switch input. Cut the line close to the primer, and install the fuel pressure take-off fitting from your kit. Connect one end of the fuel tubing to the fitting. Run the tubing to the primer, and connect the other end to the suction port.
-
8
Connect another piece of tubing to the last fitting on the primer, and run the tubing along the perimeter of the hull.
-
9
Take the brass "T" and fit two short pieces (make sure they're the same length) of tubing on the top ends of the "T." Connect the ends to the squirter fittings on the carburetor.
-
10
Connect the bottom end of the "T" to the line running from the primer. Trim it to size before connecting.
-
11
Reinstall the gas cap and prime the system by squeezing the priming bulb or using a syringe to pump the fuel through the lines. Once the fuel is flowing through the lines, dress the lines and use zip ties from the primer kit to secure the big fuel lines on the "T." Replace the fuel arrester assemble, using the adhesive to secure any loose screws.
