Instructions for a Calibrated Water Test
Like a power meter, a water meter is located in most homes. It keeps track of the water usage for a particular household for billing purposes. You can't tamper with your water meter, but you can actually test it to make sure it is calibrated properly and is measuring water output correctly. Locate the water meter in your home. It will likely be in a basement.

Run water in your home while looking at the meter. Continue doing so until the red hand on the dial reaches 0. In this position, the hand will be pointing straight up. Stop running the water.

Run the water again and fill a 1-gallon container with water. Stop running the water.

Check the red hand on the dial. It should be pointing at .1333 cubic feet. If it isn't, contact the water and power company as the meter may be off.
