How to Make Polka Dot Wall Stickers

Add polka dots to your walls with custom stickers.

The jaunty, cheery decoration of polka dots is a quick and simple way to perk up a wall, but you don't need to buy expensive appliques for your home. Everything you need to make polka dot wall stickers is available from a craft supply, office or dollar shop. You'll be able to customize the polka dot size, color and quantity to your exact wall requirements when you make your own instead of buying packs from someone else. Take advantage of supplies in your kitchen to serve as the dot stencils, and start doing the polka.

Things You'll Need

• Uncut 8 1/2-inch-by-11-inch sticker paper sheets
• Plate, saucer, cup
• Pencil
• Scissors
• Paper towels
• Markers or paint

Instructions

1. Place a sheet of sticker paper on a flat, anchored surface such as a table.

2. Place a round object such as a cup or saucer face down on the sticker paper.

3. Trace around the object with a pencil to form a circle.

4. Cut the dot out of the paper and discard the excess. If there is room on the paper for additional dots, use smaller items to maximize the sticker paper and make more dots.

5. Place two or more sticker paper pages face down. Tape their backsides together along the seams. Turn the pages face up so the sticker part is showing.

6. Turn a large plate or bowl upside down and trace around it to make large wall dot stickers. Repeat to form as many large dots as required.

7. Place paper towels on top of the table's surface. Lay the cut out dots on the paper towels, anchoring them with a ring of tape applied to their undersides if desired. Color the dots with markers, paint or spray paint as desired, such as solid colors, stripes or designs. Let dry, peel the backings and apply to the wall.

Tips & Warnings

• Making polka dot wall stickers should be a rule-free creative experience -- you get to choose the display of the dots once you've got the stickers. The only real limitation you'll find is the size of the dots themselves. When you're making the stickers, you're limited to the size of the sticker paper, which usually comes in uncut 8 1/2-inch-by-11-inch sheets, similar to precut label sticker pages. When using two pieces of sticker paper, you'll have to peel and apply carefully to make sure the diameters of the two halves of the dots meet up exactly.
