1
Determine whether the tree is on public property or is considered protected by a federal or state law or town ordinance. Your local town government should provide this information to residents. In some cases an arborist may have to inspect the tree; these consultant fees can vary widely.

2
Estimate the height of the tree to be dropped. Use nearby buildings as a gauge for how tall a tree might be if buildings are around. The taller the tree, the more expensive the cost will be. For example a tree under 30 feet is often at the lower end of the pricing while a 100 foot tree is at the highest end of pricing. Trees in between will vary in price.

3
Note if there are utility lines, poles, and buildings/structures touching or very close to the tree. The closer the tree is to these structures, the higher the cost will be.

4
Factor in additional costs such as stump destruction, branch chipping and removal of the debris. Some companies will include these services while others may charge a fee based on the size of the stump, amount of branches and amount of debris to clean up.
