How to Dreadlock a Beard

Give your beard a dramatic flair by turning it into dreadlocks. Just as with dreadlocks on your head, dreadlocks in your beard are made by ratting the hair into tight tangles and rolling them into shape. To get started, your beard should be at least 6 inches long. Use dread wax, a hard wax sold by companies specializing in products for dreadlocked hair, to help hold your beard locks together as they tighten and grow.

Gather a 1-inch section of your beard and twist it gently at the roots. Hold the hair taut at the ends.

Rat the hair with a fine-tooth comb. Start at the ends and comb rapidly toward your face, over and over again, until the hair becomes a mass of tangles and shrinks to half its length.

Scoop out a tiny bit of dread wax on the tip of your pinkie nail. The wax should cover approximately one-half of your nail. Rub the wax between your hands to warm and soften it.

Roll the ratted hair between your hands. Twist it tight and roll it again, working all the wax into it.

Repeat steps 1 through 4 with small sections of your beard until your entire beard is dreaded.
