1
Attach the left taper comb to the clipper blade. Often, two taper combs are included with clipper kits: a left taper and a right taper. The left taper comb tapers longer from left to right, and the right taper comb tapers longer from right to left.
-
2
Position the clippers at your bottom hairline behind your left ear. Most commonly, the hair behind the ears needs to be tapered, but the same process is used to taper each section of your head.

3
Press the taper comb attachment flat to your head. You should feel it touch the back of your ear.
-
4
Cut along the backside of your ear, from bottom to top. Keep the taper comb pressed against the back of your ear. As you move the clippers around your ear, the taper comb cuts the hair shorter at the bottom of your hairline, and tapers longer toward the middle of your head.

5
Remove the left taper comb. Attach the right taper comb.

6
Position the clippers at your bottom hairline behind your right ear.
