How to Make Autobiographies

How to Make Autobiographies thumbnail
Start with a basic outline of your life and the stories you want to include.

An autobiography should be rather easy to write because you are the subject. If you are required to write an autobiography for school, or just want to write one for fun, don't be intimidated by all of the information you have to include. You can include as much or as little of your life story as you want. There are, however, a few guidelines that will make the process a little easier and help you to organize your thoughts.

Instructions

    • 1

Think about your life and the major milestones that have made you the person that you are today.

    • 2

Write down everything that you want to include in your autobiography. Memories of your childhood, loved ones and accomplishments make for interesting autobiographies.

    • 3

Look through photographs and cards, or watch old family videos for inspiration. These will help those old memories to resurface.

    • 4

Decide where you want to start your story. You can start from any point in your life, from childhood to adulthood. Pick a time in your life that is especially important to you and start there.

    • 5

Create an outline. You want your information to be in chronological order, for the most part. Organize your information, starting from the earliest memories to the present.

    • 6

Begin your autobiography by introducing yourself. Think about the questions that someone you just met would ask and get those out of the way.

    • 7

Tell the reader why he or she is reading your autobiography. What is it that makes you interesting?

    • 8

Be honest in your descriptions. Don't over exaggerate or leave out important information because you're embarrassed.

    • 9

End your autobiography with a strong conclusion that will leave the reader satisfied. End on a story that sums up your life, or talk about how all of the small stories got you to where you are now.

    • 10

Write your first draft the best you can, but don't worry too much about perfect writing. The purpose of a first draft is to get the memories and stories out on paper, in the order you want.

    • 11

Re-read the draft and go back through to edit and rewrite. At this stage you can add colorful language and vivid descriptions for your reader. Make sure you edit for spelling and punctuation.

    • 12

Give your autobiography to someone else to read for comments about whether it all makes sense and if you need to add or remove details.

    • 13

Write the final draft of your autobiography. Make sure you are happy with the final product. It's about you, so you need to be happy with it.
