Shag haircuts are popular with men as well as women.

Shag haircuts incorporate layers of hair that get progressively shorter near the crown of the head. This style was particularly popular in the 1970s, when teenage girls emulated the feathered shag haircuts of celebrities such as Farrah Fawcett and boys imitated their favorite rock 'n' roll stars. Today, shag haircuts still hold appeal for males or females who want a low-maintenance but distinctive hairstyle. The shag haircut is a versatile option suitable for those with long, short, wavy or straight hair. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Place the towel around the shoulders of the person who is receiving the haircut. Hair should be clean, damp and combed free of any tangles.

    • 2

Part hair in the center. Divide hair into sections an inch or two wide. Secure sections with elastic bands or clips.

    • 3

For drastic or choppy layers, hold a section of hair at a 180-degree angle, so that it sticks straight up from the head. Hold the hair between the middle and index finger just below the area where you will make the intended cut. Using the fingers as a guide, cut straight across the section of hair. Repeat this process with sections of hair until the desired length and look is accomplished.

For more subtle layers, hold the hair at a 90-degree angle so that it sticks out sideways from the head. Using the fingers as a guide, cut the hair at a downward angle. The steepness of the angle is up to the stylist, depending on the client's desires. A good starting point is to cut at a 45-degree angle.

Check your progress often, holding up sections of hair from each side of the part and comparing them to ensure that the layers are even on each side.

Tips & Warnings

  • Use the tips of the scissors to make cuts.

  • Do not use dull scissors or cuts will be uneven.

  • Do not try to cut a shag on yourself; it is difficult to get the layers even.
