How to Live With a Recluse

How to Live With a Recluse thumbnail
Reclusive people are socially withdrawn and sometimes depressed.

Reclusive behavior can be a sign of an illness as serious as schizophrenia or simply a person's desire to be alone. Communication with reclusive people is either challenging or impossible, making living with them very difficult. Coexist peacefully with a recluse by respecting each other's space, communicating in alternative ways, such as through notes, and avoid making loud noise or inviting too many people over at one time.

Instructions

    • 1

Create boundaries within your home. This shouldn't upset either of you; instead, it should be an opportunity to create quiet spaces that are off limits to the other person. Respect each other's private space at all times.

    • 2

Form a plan to communicate. Even though you live together, email, text messages or handwritten notes are alternative ways to communicate with someone who is a recluse. You must communicate in order to live together in order to discuss bills, repairs or other issues.

    • 3

Keep noise levels at a minimum. If you live with a recluse, you'll have to plan social gatherings elsewhere. Don't play loud music, talk too loudly on the phone or invite too many people over at once.

Tips & Warnings

  • Reclusive behavior can be a sign of a serious mental illness. If you think this is the case, contact a mental health counselor for advice.
