How to Get Practice on a Forklift

How to Get Practice on a Forklift thumbnail
A forklift is different from other types of vehicles.

A forklift is a type of construction vehicle that is used to lift up or carry large items and loads. To operate a forklift, you need to have very specialized training and experience. One of the most important parts of your training will be actually getting to practice operating the forklift. Before you're fully qualified, you should only practice using a forklift under the supervision of a qualified professional. This ensures your safety, as well as the safety of those around you.

Instructions

    • 1

Talk to your employer about learning to drive a forklift. If you already work in the construction industry or for another type of business that utilizes a forklift, you may be able to receive training and practice directly through your employer.

    • 2

Complete the training process required by your employer. Many forklift operators get practice through on-the-job training. Complete this process to the best of your ability and take advantage of the knowledge and guidance of senior employees.

    • 3

Seek employment in the construction field if you do not already have an employer. Again, express interest in forklift operation before you're even hired. Once on the job, you can receive all the practice you need to become an experienced operator.

    • 4

Take an OSHA-approved training course for forklift operation. OSHA, or the Occupational Safety and Health Administration through the U.S. Department of Labor, provides specific guidelines for such courses, including receiving practice before you can become an operator. These courses can be taken through the OSHA Training Institute or OSHA Training Institute Education Centers.
