How to Paint a Pan Ceiling
If you have a pan ceiling that needs to be repainted, you do not need to feel overwhelmed by the project. You can paint a pan ceiling with the same materials you would use to paint a standard ceiling. The difference is in the technique you will perform with a pan ceiling, since it is a reverse drop ceiling. When you look at a pan ceiling, you see a ceiling that looks like the middle has been carved out. Does this Spark an idea?

1
Spread a drop cloth across the floor. When painting a ceiling, you are going to drip paint on the floor.
-
2
Line the molding around the ceiling with painter's tape. If you are painting your pan ceiling different colors, you eventually will tape off the outer edges of the box or boxes of the pan ceiling. When painting a pan ceiling one color, just tape off the trim lining the outer edges of the ceiling to keep the ceiling paint off the walls. To accomplish this step, you may need an assistant to hold a step ladder as you climb up the ladder to apply the tape.

3
Open the ceiling paint with a screwdriver. Mix the ceiling paint with a paint stick. You should have had the ceiling paint thoroughly mixed in a machine at your local home construction supply store before opening it and hand mixing it.
-
4
Dip a trim brush of your choice into the ceiling paint can and paint the outer edges of the pan ceiling with the trim brush. Using a trim brush allows you to reach areas on the ceiling that a paint roller has trouble reaching.
-
5
Pour the ceiling paint into a paint tray. Put on the goggles. Using a paint roller will cause paint to fly at times.
-
6
Roll a paint roller with an attached extender arm into the ceiling paint in the paint tray. Roll the paint roller gently and multiple times into the paint and over the speed bumps -- or the raised surface -- in the paint tray that are designed to remove excess paint. You want your paint roller to be evenly coated with paint but not oversaturated.
-
7
Roll the paint on the pan ceiling close to the border you created with the trim brush. This helps to smooth out the border of paint created by the trim brush and give fluidity to the ceiling finish. Paint the wide, outer spaces on the pan ceiling and then slowly work your way inside the reverse drop part of the ceiling. You will use the same techniques as you used to paint the outer part of the ceiling, using both the trim brush and the paint roller to create a smooth, even finish.
