How to Make Fabric Not Unravel
Anyone who sews on a regular basis has probably bought fabric only to have it become a twisted, unraveled mess in the washer and dryer. It is important to wash and dry fabric before using it for a sewing project. Fabric will shrink to some degree, no matter the type. Keeping fabric from unraveling or fraying takes only a few minutes and is well worth it.

1
Thread your sewing machine and set it to zigzag stitching. Use a good quality thread as cheaper threads tend to make lint build up in the bobbin area, causing thread to break or become jammed.
-
2
Zigzag stitch along raw edges of fabric, about 1/8 in. away from the edges. A zigzag stitch holds fabric fibers in place during the washing and drying cycles.

3
Place the fabric in a lingerie bag to further protect it from unraveling. Sometimes fabric or threads get caught on parts or other items inside the washing machine, causing it to twist and bind.
-
4
Set washer on delicate and cold water wash and rinse. Cold water helps to reduce shrinkage of fabric fibers that can distort the shape.
-
5
Place lingerie bag and mild detergent in the washing machine. Using a mild detergent with fabric helps to reduce the deterioration of the fibers and fading.

Tips & Warnings
Zigzag stitching is difficult to remove if you make a mistake. To avoid this, practice on a scrap piece of the fabric to ensure the correct thread and bobbin tensions.
